Lipscomb University appears to have removed free access to their session featuring “How to Be Antiracist” author Ibram Kendi. The anti-racist thought leader is slated to appear as a guest speaker during the university’s Christian Scholars Conference this week.
Last Wednesday, The Tennessee Star registered with Lipscomb University for a link to Kendi’s webinar. The university made it clear that the session was open to the public. Following reporting from The Star on the event, the university closed the signup form. We never received the link that was promised.
Since we never received the link, The Star submitted an inquiry requesting clarification about the access to the event. In response, university spokespersons shared that the sessions aren’t open to the media. As of press time, nowhere on the registration pages does the university say that members of the media may not attend.
However, those interested in attending could pay anywhere from $195 at minimum – for virtual attendance only, not including the $60 surcharge for provosts, deans, or administration. At most, individuals could spend $530 for in-person attendance with all the add-ons – and an additional $20 for each additional ticket to the Tokens Show. Regular in-person registration without the add-ons costs $220 minimum.
We inquired with university spokespersons as to whether the event was still accessible for free to those who’d signed up to receive a webinar link prior to the closure of the Google signup form.
Lipscomb University spokespersons told The Star that “events are limited to registered participants and specially invited guests.” When we asked for clarification – specifically, if members of the public that had signed up for a free webinar link using the Google form prior to last week would be able to attend using that link. They didn’t respond by press time.
Kendi is scheduled to speak on Friday at 10:45 a.m. CST.
